Winter tree pruning in Chicago's suburbs matters more this year because northern Illinois trees just survived one of the most punishing growing seasons in recent memory, and most of the damage is still hiding in the canopy.


Two separate storm complexes formally classified as derechos rolled through our region in a single summer, a record warm and wet March pushed trees into a fast, soft growth flush, and a very strong El Niño is now favored to reshape the winter ahead. Put those three things together and you get canopies full of cracked unions, hanging limbs, and overextended branches heading into a season of freeze, thaw, and wind.


Here is the good news. The dormant season is the single best window we get in northern Illinois to fix all of it. From roughly early November through the first days of April, the leaves are down, the disease vectors are asleep, and the ground is firm. That is when a Certified Arborist can actually see the architecture of your tree and make the handful of cuts that will shape the next twenty years of its life.

The Short Answer: Why This Winter Is Different

Most years, dormant pruning is simply good practice. This year, it is triage plus planning.

Your trees took three distinct hits in 2026, and each one left a different kind of problem behind. The wet spring built a lot of new wood very quickly. The storms tore at that new wood while it was still soft and heavy with leaves. And the winter ahead is forecast to be unusually mild, which sounds friendly but actually complicates the pruning calendar in ways most homeowners never hear about.


We will walk through all three. But if you only remember one thing, remember this: the damage from an August windstorm does not announce itself in August. It announces itself in February, when a cracked union finally lets go under an ice load, usually onto something you care about.


What 2026 Did to Trees in the Western Suburbs


A Spring That Told Trees to Grow Fast

March 2026 was a strange month. The Illinois State Climatologist recorded a statewide average temperature of 47.3 degrees, which is 5.9 degrees above the 1991 to 2020 normal and tied for the ninth warmest March on record going back to 1895. Precipitation ran 4.85 inches statewide, nearly two inches above normal, making it the fifteenth wettest March on record and the wettest since 1985.


What does a warm, soaked March do to a maple in Wheaton? It tells that tree to wake up early and grow hard. Trees are not strategic about this. Given water and warmth, they push extension growth, and that new growth is long, leafy, and structurally weak. Think of it like a teenager who grew six inches in one summer. All the length arrived before any of the strength did.


June kept the faucet on. It landed as a top five wettest June on record statewide. Then in July, Chicagoland caught the kind of localized deluges we have come to expect, including more than eight inches of rain around Sugar Grove and Aurora over the Fourth of July weekend and a widespread three to four inches from storms on July 27.


So by late July, our landscape trees were carrying the heaviest, longest, greenest canopies they had held in years. Beautiful, honestly. Also a liability.


A Summer With Two Derechos

A derecho is not a marketing word. The National Weather Service applies it to a specific thing: a long-lived thunderstorm complex that produces a continuous swath of damaging wind across hundreds of miles. Northern Illinois normally goes years between them.

We got two in ten weeks.


The first arrived on June 10, 2026, when an afternoon line of storms produced wind gusts up to 80 to 85 mph across much of northern Illinois, along with two confirmed EF-0 tornadoes, one southeast of Maple Park and one in the Palos Heights and Alsip area.


The second, on August 11, 2026, was worse. It organized over eastern Iowa in the early morning, raced across the region by midday, and delivered widespread 70 to 100 plus mph straight line winds. NWS damage surveys documented gusts of 70 to 90 mph across parts of southern Kane, DuPage, Will, and southern Cook counties, with a peak measured gust of 99 mph at Gary. An EF2 tornado carved a 25.75 mile path with estimated peak winds of 115 mph.


Ask yourself what a 90 mph gust does to a bur oak that spent all spring growing long, heavy, water-loaded branches. It does not politely remove the weak parts. It loads every branch union in the tree to somewhere near its limit, and the ones that fail completely fall down. The ones that almost fail stay right where they are.



The Damage You Cannot See From Your Patio

This is the part that costs people money.


When a mature tree gets hammered by wind, the obvious failures hit the lawn and get cleaned up within a week. What stays in the canopy is subtler:


  • Partially detached limbs, still connected by a strip of bark, resting on branches below them. Arborists call these hangers or widowmakers, and the second name is not a joke.


  • Cracked branch unions, especially at codominant stems where two roughly equal leaders meet in a tight V. Included bark in those unions means there was never much holding them together to begin with.


  • Torqued and split leaders that have shifted but not separated, often invisible until the leaves drop.


  • Root plate movement, where the whole tree rocked in saturated soil. You sometimes see it as a subtle heave in the turf on one side of the trunk.


  • Bark tears and stripped wounds that will become decay entry points if they are not addressed cleanly.


Every one of those is far easier to find in December than in July. Leaves hide everything. Once the canopy is bare, a climber moving through the structure can put hands and eyes on every union in the tree.


What a Very Strong El Niño Means for the Dormant Season Ahead


A Longer Working Window, With a Catch

On August 13, 2026, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center held the ENSO Alert System at El Niño Advisory and reported that El Niño is strengthening, with a greater than 90 percent chance of a very strong event during fall and winter 2026 to 2027. July Niño-3.4 index values came in at plus 1.4 degrees Celsius, with eastern equatorial Pacific anomalies exceeding plus 2.0 degrees.


For the Great Lakes and upper Midwest, strong El Niño winters tend to tilt milder than average. That has a real upside for tree work. Milder winters usually mean more workable days, fewer weather cancellations, and a longer stretch where crews can get on your property without fighting a foot of snow.


Now the catch. A mild winter often runs straight into an early spring, and an early spring shortens the safe end of the oak and elm pruning window. The Morton Arboretum makes this point directly in its guidance on how and when to prune trees: the traditional mid-October to mid-April window is shifting, and you should watch the condition of the trees rather than the calendar.


Translation for a homeowner in Glen Ellyn with three big red oaks: do not plan on pruning them in the last week of March next year. If spring 2027 arrives early, that door may already be closed.


Freeze, Thaw, and Ice Instead of Clean Snow

There is a second wrinkle. Mild does not mean gentle.


A winter that hovers near freezing produces more mixed precipitation events than a cold winter does. Freezing rain is the specific enemy here. A quarter inch of ice accretion can add enormous weight to branch tips, and it loads exactly the long, overextended growth that this year's wet spring produced and this summer's derechos already weakened.


So the mental model is this. You have trees carrying unusually long limbs, some of which are already cracked, heading into a winter that is statistically more likely to hand them ice than powder. That is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to prune with intent before January.


Why Dormant Season Pruning Works Better in Northern Illinois


You Can Actually See the Tree

Pruning a fully leafed tree is like assessing a house from the curb with the drapes closed. You can guess. You cannot verify.


With the canopy bare, we can trace every scaffold branch back to the trunk, evaluate aspect ratios at each union, spot included bark, find decay pockets, and identify which limbs are genuinely structural and which are redundant. That visibility is why the cuts we make in winter are usually fewer, smaller, and more precise than the cuts anyone makes in July.


Oak Wilt and Dutch Elm Disease Take the Winter Off

This is the non-negotiable one. Oak wilt is a lethal fungal disease spread in part by sap and picnic beetles that are attracted to fresh wounds during the growing season. Dutch elm disease works similarly through bark beetles.


The Morton Arboretum's oak wilt guidance is blunt about it: oaks should not be pruned between mid-April and mid-October, and the safest time to prune oaks runs from early November until very early April. Those beetles are dormant in the cold. A cut made in January is simply not an invitation.


Given how much oak canopy defines properties in Hinsdale, Oak Brook, Riverside, and River Forest, this alone justifies scheduling oak work in the dormant window and nowhere else.


Frozen Ground Protects Your Landscape

Firm or frozen soil carries equipment weight without rutting turf or compacting root zones. If you have invested in perennial beds, a stone patio, or an irrigated lawn, winter access is dramatically kinder to all of it. Compaction is one of the slowest and most permanent forms of damage a landscape can take, and it is entirely avoidable with good timing.


Cuts Made in Winter Get a Full Season to Close

Trees do not heal wounds the way we do. They compartmentalize, walling off damage and growing new tissue over it. A properly made cut in February sits quietly until the tree wakes up, then gets an entire growing season of callus development. Cut the same branch in August and the tree has weeks, not months, before it shuts down for the year.


The Pruning That Should Happen This Winter, In Priority Order


Not every tree needs work, and honest arborists say so. But if your property took wind this summer, here is how we would sequence it.


1. Storm Damage Restoration

Restoration pruning, as defined under the ANSI A300 standards, redevelops structure and form after damage from storms, topping, or other causes. It means removing hangers, cleanly reducing torn stubs back to appropriate lateral branches, and selecting which of the remaining shoots will become the tree's new architecture. Done well, a storm damaged tree can recover into something beautiful. Done poorly, or not at all, it becomes a decay farm.


2. Structural Pruning on Young and Middle Aged Trees

This is where the return on investment is highest and where almost nobody spends money. Subordinating a competing leader on a fifteen year old maple takes twenty minutes and a few small cuts. Removing that same leader at forty years old takes a crane, a permit conversation, and a wound the tree will never fully close. Prune early, prune small, prune often.


3. Risk Reduction on Mature Specimen Trees

For the big trees near your house, driveway, or the neighbor's roof, the question is not aesthetic. It is whether the likelihood of failure and the consequence of failure add up to something you should act on. That is a formal process, and it is what a tree health and risk assessment is for. Sometimes the answer is a reduction cut. Sometimes it is a cable. Sometimes it is monitoring and nothing else.


4. Deadwood and Clearance

Dead branches are easiest to spot in summer, when they are the ones without leaves, so a good arborist maps them in the growing season and removes them in the dormant season. Clearance work over roofs, walkways, and drives fits naturally here too.


What It Actually Costs You to Wait

Let us be plain about the economics, because our clients tend to think in terms of assets rather than expenses.


Planned dormant pruning is scheduled work. We arrive when we said we would, with the right rigging, and we leave the site clean. Emergency work after a failure is a different animal entirely. It happens at night or on a weekend, often with a road closed or a utility involved, with damaged property underneath, and with an insurance adjuster in the conversation. The labor is harder, the risk is higher, and the tree usually ends up removed rather than saved.


There is also the asset itself. The Morton Arboretum's 2020 Chicago Region Tree Census counted 172 million trees across the seven county region, up from 157 million in 2010, providing more than 416 million dollars in ecosystem benefits annually. The same census documented what happens when we ignore a threat: standing ash trees fell 46 percent, from 12.7 million to 6.8 million, with roughly 4 million more dead or dying.

That is the emerald ash borer lesson in one sentence. Deferred maintenance on trees does not stay deferred. It compounds.


How to Prepare Your Trees for 2027, Step by Step


Walk Your Property Before the Leaves Drop

Take fifteen minutes in September or October. Stand under each large tree and look up. Note anything hanging, anything with obvious bark tearing, anything leaning differently than it did in May. Photograph it. You are not diagnosing, you are building a punch list.


Get an Assessment Before You Get a Quote

Here is an uncomfortable truth about our industry. If you call five companies and ask "what will you charge to trim my trees," you will get five numbers for five completely different scopes of work, and you will have no way to compare them.

Pruning is one lever. Root health is the other, and it is usually the more important one. A proper mulch ring, two to four inches deep and kept off the trunk flare, does more for a stressed tree than most homeowners believe. If a tree is declining and you cannot see why, the answer is very often below grade, which is where air spade root collar excavation earns its keep by finding girdling roots or a buried root flare without cutting a single root.

Skip the reflexive annual fertilization. Feed the soil when a test says the soil needs it, not because it is April.


What Homeowners Get Wrong About Winter Pruning

"The tree looks fine, so it is fine." A tree that came through a 90 mph gust standing upright has told you it did not fail. It has told you nothing about how close it came.


"I will wait until spring and see what leafs out." Reasonable instinct, wrong answer for oaks and elms. Waiting until leaf out puts you inside the beetle window, and it also means any cracked union spends the entire winter under ice load without intervention.


"Topping will make it safer." Topping is the fastest way to create a genuinely dangerous tree. It removes the crown, triggers a mass of weakly attached epicormic sprouts, and guarantees decay at every cut. It is the one practice that turns a manageable problem into a permanent one.


"Any two guys with a truck can do this." Rigging a limb out of a mature oak over a slate roof is a technical skill. So is knowing which limb should not come out at all.


Why We Climb Instead of Reaching From a Bucket

Most of the properties we work on in Hinsdale, Elmhurst, La Grange, and Oak Park were not designed around truck access. Narrow side yards, mature beds, brick drives, and back lot trees make bucket work either impossible or destructive.
