What's the difference between tree trimming and tree pruning?

In practice, "trimming" and "pruning" often describe the same work — the difference is in the approach. "Trimming" tends to describe indiscriminate cutting to reduce size or shape. "Pruning" describes deliberate, objective-based cuts made with understanding of tree biology — removing specific branches for specific reasons (deadwood removal, structural improvement, clearance, health improvement).
