If your crabapple is dropping spotted, yellowing leaves in July, you are almost certainly looking at apple scab, a fungal disease that overwinters in last fall's leaf litter and infects new leaves during spring rain. It is the single most common reason crabapples go bare by midsummer across Chicago's western and northern suburbs.


Here is the part that frustrates homeowners most. By the time you see the spots, the infection happened two to three weeks ago. Apple scab is controlled by preventing infection, not by curing it, which means the tree you are worried about today is treated on next spring's calendar, not this week's.


The good news is that this disease is genuinely predictable, and apple scab treatment is available if timed correctly. It is driven by rainfall, temperature, and the leaves you left on the ground last October. It is not bad luck, and it is not a mystery. This guide walks through how to identify it, why 2026 was such a punishing year for it in DuPage and Cook Counties, and exactly what a working treatment plan looks like month by month.

Why Is My Crabapple Losing Leaves in Summer?


Because the leaves were infected in spring and the tree is shedding them. A crabapple that leafs out beautifully in May and looks half naked by late July is following the standard apple scab timeline, not dying of something sudden.


Michigan State University Extension describes this as a perennial question on their garden hotline, especially in wet seasons. University of Illinois Extension makes a related point that explains why it catches people off guard: most homeowners do not notice canopy problems until visible damage passes about 10 percent of the crown. We do not spend much time looking up.


What Apple Scab Looks Like on the Leaves


Symptoms usually start on the undersides of leaves as small, irregular lesions in light brown to olive green. As infection advances, the spots become more circular and take on a velvety olive appearance, then darken toward brown and black. Infected tissue thickens, which makes the upper leaf surface bulge and the lower surface dimple. Leaves curl, scorch at the margins, and drop early when the leaf stem gets infected.


The margins are your best field clue. The Morton Arboretum describes scab lesions as having feathery, indistinct edges, unlike the sharp bordered spots of many bacterial problems. Run a fingertip across one. If it feels slightly raised and fuzzy rather than flat, you are almost certainly looking at scab.


What It Looks Like on the Fruit


Fruit lesions begin as nearly circular, velvety dark green spots. The skin near the lesion margin ruptures, and older lesions turn black, scabby, and cracked. On ornamental crabapples that means fruit that never colors properly and drops early, costing you the winter interest that was probably half the reason the tree went in.


What It Is Not


Three lookalikes worth ruling out before anyone sprays anything:


  • Chlorosis. Yellow leaves with green veins, no spots. This is a soil pH and nutrient availability problem, covered in our guide to why your tree's leaves are turning yellow.

  • Cedar apple rust. Bright orange or yellow spots, often with small tubular structures underneath. Different fungus, and it needs a juniper or red cedar host nearby.

  • Aphid honeydew and sooty mold. Sticky leaves with a black surface film that rubs off. An insect problem, not a disease.


Getting this right matters, because the treatments are not interchangeable and a fungicide does nothing for a nutrient deficiency.


Why 2026 Hit Chicago Area Crabapples So Hard


Because this spring produced close to a worst case scenario for scab infection. If your tree looked worse this year than it has in a decade, you were not imagining it.


More than 10 inches of rain fell at O'Hare between March 1 and mid April, the wettest start to spring in 155 years of Chicago weather records dating to 1872. It rained measurably on 16 of 18 consecutive days. By mid April, 5.47 inches had fallen for the month alone, roughly 366 percent above normal.


The statewide picture matched. The Illinois State Climatologist recorded 6.37 inches of April precipitation statewide, the 7th wettest April on record in Chicago, following the wettest March since 1985. The Fox River at Algonquin peaked at 12 feet for the first time since 2017.

Now overlay that on the disease. Every one of those rain events, arriving during the exact weeks crabapple buds were breaking and leaves were expanding, was an opportunity for infection. Not a risk. An opportunity, taken, over and over.


What Is Crabapple Scab, Exactly?


Apple scab is a fungal disease of leaves and fruit caused by Venturia inaequalis. It affects apples and crabapples, and per Illinois Extension, related fungi cause scab on other members of the rose family. The same pathogen also hits mountain ash, pear, and cotoneaster, which matters if you have a mixed border and cannot figure out why the problem keeps circling back.


Think of it like mildew in a bathroom. The spores are always present. What determines whether you have a problem is how long surfaces stay wet.


Why Crabapples Get Hit Harder Than Anything Else in the Yard


Crabapples are among the most widely planted ornamentals in Chicago area landscapes, and many cultivars installed through the 1980s and 1990s were selected for flower color rather than disease resistance. A homeowner in La Grange Park with three matching crabapples along a driveway may be looking at three trees that were genetically set up to fail in a wet spring before they left the nursery.


Iowa State Extension notes the practical result: susceptible cultivars like 'Spring Snow' lose their leaves nearly every year, while resistant selections like 'Prairifire' sail through the same conditions on the same block.


The Disease Cycle: Why Timing Beats Everything Else


Understand three stages and you will understand why most spray programs fail.


Stage One: The Fungus Overwinters in Your Leaf Litter


Venturia inaequalis survives winter inside fallen infected leaves, forming tiny fruiting bodies called pseudothecia. Every scabbed leaf that hits your beds in October is a spore factory being built for April.


This is the most actionable fact in the entire cycle, and the one most often ignored. Next spring's inoculum is sitting on your property right now.


Stage Two: Primary Infection During Spring Rain


The first spores mature and become infectious right around bud break. Mature spores begin discharging within 30 minutes of rain starting. Discharge peaks from pink bud through bloom, and nearly all of it finishes within one to two weeks after petal fall.


Illinois Extension puts the window bluntly: the battle against scab is won or lost from late April through early June, bud break to fruit set. Everything after that is damage control.


Stage Three: Secondary Infection All Summer


Once established, the fungus produces a second spore type that reinfects new foliage. These appear roughly 9 to 17 days after primary infection and spread through the tree for the rest of the season. That is why a crabapple that looked fine on Memorial Day can be an eyesore by the Fourth of July.


The Mills Table: The Math Behind an Infection Event


Infection requires a specific number of hours of leaf wetness at a given temperature, and nothing more. Since 1944, plant pathologists have used a decision tool called the Mills table to predict this. MacHardy and Gadoury revised it in 1989, finding ascospores need about three hours less than originally calculated.

At 61 to 75 degrees, six hours of wetness is enough. Six hours.


Now picture a typical May morning in Wheaton. Overnight dew, a dawn shower, humidity that never lets the interior of the canopy dry. Six hours is nothing. In a spring like 2026, most rain events cleared that bar without effort.


Why This Table Is the Whole Argument for Prevention

Look at the last column. Symptoms lag infection by 9 to 16 days, and protective fungicides work by stopping spores from germinating on the leaf surface. Illinois Extension is direct about it: most of these products are preventives, not curatives, and once leaves start to yellow and drop it is too late to protect the tree.

You cannot spray a wall after the paint has soaked in.


Does Apple Scab Kill Crabapple Trees?


Not directly, and not quickly, which is exactly why it gets tolerated too long. A couple of years of defoliation will not hurt an otherwise healthy tree. The danger is cumulative.

The Morton Arboretum states it plainly: apple scab can lead to defoliation, and years of repeated defoliation can lead to decline of the host tree. Ohio State Extension adds that early defoliation makes trees more susceptible to winter injury, which is no small thing in northern Illinois.


Picture a household running on savings. One bad year is survivable. Five consecutive years of spending stored energy on leaves the tree discards by midsummer, and there is nothing in reserve when drought, borers, or a hard winter arrive. The scab does not deliver the killing blow. It just removes every defense the tree had.


How to Treat Apple Scab on Crabapples in the Chicago Area


Effective treatment is a system, not a spray. Here is the sequence we use with clients across DuPage and Cook Counties.


Step One: Fall Sanitation, the Step Almost Everyone Skips


Remove and destroy fallen leaves under and around infected crabapples. Ohio State notes this dramatically reduces the spores available to restart the cycle next spring.


The research is more encouraging than most people expect. Sutton, MacHardy, and Lord, publishing in Plant Disease, found that treating all leaf litter cut scab risk by 80 to 90 percent. Where 10 to 35 percent of litter could not be reached, risk still dropped 50 to 65 percent. Urea applied in November reduced trapped spores by 50 percent, and April applications before bud break reduced them by 66 percent.


Read that again. A thorough fall cleanup can cut next spring's infection pressure by more than half before a single drop of fungicide is applied. It is the highest return activity in the entire program, and it costs you a leaf blower and an afternoon.


Do not compost the leaves in place. Do not mulch mow them into the bed under the tree. Get them off site.


Step Two: Preventive Fungicide Timed to Bud Development


Protective applications begin at bud break and continue on label intervals through primary infection season. The Morton Arboretum notes that scab is effectively managed by treating new emerging leaves in spring, and that sprays must be repeated at labeled intervals.

Timing keys to the tree's stage, not to a calendar date. In a warm March like 2026, bud break arrives early. In a cold spring it lags. We time applications to what the buds are actually doing on your property, and we adjust when rain compresses an interval.


Product selection, rotation of active ingredient classes to manage resistance, and application all fall under Illinois Department of Agriculture licensing for commercial applicators. Step Three: Prune for Airflow and Light


Every hour you shave off leaf wetness is an hour the fungus does not get. Ohio State recommends annual pruning to open the canopy and promote drying. The Morton Arboretum recommends thinning the crown to let light into the center, removing dead, diseased, and crossing branches, and cutting basal suckers close to the ground.


This is a real intervention, not a cosmetic one. Moving wetness duration from eight hours down to five can shift a marginal day out of the infection column entirely. Our structural pruning work follows ANSI A300 standards, which matters because poor pruning on a stressed crabapple creates wounds and water sprouts that make next year worse.


Step Four: Support the Root Zone


Illinois Extension leads its management guidance with keeping plants vigorous and avoiding stress. A tree with adequate root volume, reasonable soil moisture, and workable soil chemistry tolerates defoliation far better than one in compacted clay ringed by irrigated turf.

Most Chicago area landscape crabapples are planted in heavy clay, surrounded by mulch that has crept up the trunk, competing with lawn. Fixing the root zone will not stop scab. It substantially changes how much damage a scab year does.


Step Five: Make an Honest Replacement Decision


Sometimes the right answer is removal and replanting with a resistant cultivar. If a crabapple has defoliated by early July for five straight years, carries significant deadwood, and sits in a shaded, poorly drained corner, no fungicide program is a sound investment.

What Does Not Work


Spraying after symptoms appear. The infection is already inside the leaf tissue.


One application per year. Primary season spans several weeks and multiple rain events. A single spray covers one of them.


Fertilizer as a cure. Nitrogen does not control a fungus, and on a stressed tree it can push soft growth that is more susceptible.


Raking most of the leaves. Partial sanitation gives partial results, and leaves left under the neighboring shrub still produce spores that reach your tree.


Waiting for the tree to outgrow it. Susceptibility is genetic. A scab prone cultivar is scab prone at 40 years old.


Choosing Scab Resistant Crabapples for Northern Illinois


If you are replanting, disease resistance should be your first filter, not your last. The Morton Arboretum's crabapple cultivar guide is explicit about this, rating cultivars across four diseases, apple scab, fire blight, cedar apple rust, and powdery mildew, on an excellent to poor scale. Sargent's crabapple, for instance, carries excellent scab resistance along with good fire blight resistance.


One caution worth stating plainly. Resistant does not mean immune. In a very wet spring, even resistant trees may show some symptoms. The practical difference is still dramatic: a resistant cultivar might pick up a handful of lesions where a susceptible one stands bare by July.

What It Costs to Get This Wrong


Consider what managing this yourself actually requires. You need to track your tree's bud stage, monitor rainfall and leaf wetness duration, read the Mills table well enough to identify infection events, hold the appropriate applicator license, own equipment that covers a 25 foot canopy uniformly, rotate fungicide classes correctly, and execute a thorough fall cleanup on schedule.

Now weigh the downside. A mature, well placed ornamental crabapple is a real piece of a designed landscape. Across the seven county region, the Morton Arboretum's tree census documented 172 million trees delivering more than $416 million in annual ecosystem benefits. Your two crabapples are a small slice of that, but they are your slice.


Losing a 20 year old specimen means removal cost, replanting cost, and fifteen years of waiting for the replacement to look like anything. Prevention is not the expensive option.

October and November. Leaves come off. Every one gets cleared from the root zone and hauled off site. Where appropriate, a urea treatment speeds decomposition of what remains.


February and March. Dormant structural pruning opens the canopy for light and airflow. Deadwood out, water sprouts cleaned up.


Late March into April. Bud monitoring begins. The first protective application goes on at green tip or bud break, depending on cultivar and season.


April through early June. Applications continue on label intervals, adjusted for rainfall. This is the window that decides the year.

Frequently Asked Questions About Crabapple Scab

Can I treat apple scab in the summer after I see the spots?

Generally, no. Protective fungicides prevent spores from establishing infection, and by the time lesions are visible the fungus has been inside the leaf tissue for 9 to 16 days. Summer applications may slightly slow spread on remaining foliage, but they will not bring back dropped leaves. The productive move in summer is to plan fall sanitation and a properly timed program for next spring.

Will apple scab kill my crabapple tree?

Not from a single season. A healthy tree tolerates one or two years of defoliation without lasting harm. The risk is cumulative. Repeated annual defoliation drains stored energy, opens the tree to borers and winter injury, and can eventually contribute to death. If your tree has defoliated early three years running, it needs an intervention rather than another season of watching.

Do I really need to rake the leaves, or can I mulch them in place?

Raking and removing is meaningfully better. Research published in Plant Disease found that fully treating leaf litter cut scab risk by 80 to 90 percent, while partial treatment delivered 50 to 65 percent. Mulch mowing leaves the spore source directly under the tree, right where spring rain will splash it back into the canopy. If you do mulch mow, pair it with a urea application and expect less benefit than full removal.

Are there crabapple varieties that do not get scab in Illinois?

There are cultivars with excellent scab resistance, including Sargent's crabapple and others rated by the Morton Arboretum, but resistant is not the same as immune. In a very wet spring, even resistant trees can show symptoms. Does apple scab spread from my neighbor's crabapple to mine?

Yes. Spores are airborne and move readily between nearby trees, and infected leaves left on an adjacent property keep producing inoculum. On tight suburban lots in places like Riverside or Oak Park, where crabapples may sit twenty feet apart across a property line, we often recommend coordinating fall cleanup with neighbors.

Is apple scab the same thing as cedar apple rust?

No. Different fungi, different life cycles, though they can affect the same tree in the same year. Apple scab produces olive green to black lesions with feathery margins and overwinters in fallen leaves. Cedar apple rust produces bright orange spots and requires a juniper or red cedar host to complete its cycle. Management differs, which is one more reason accurate diagnosis comes before treatment.

When should I call an arborist about my crabapple?
