That distinction matters more than almost anything else we can teach you about your property. A healthy, well structured, properly rooted tree is remarkably good at handling wind. It flexes, it sheds load, it recovers. A tree carrying a weak union, a hidden pocket of decay, or a root system compromised by construction ten years ago is a different animal entirely. It has been waiting for a specific afternoon, and on July 27, 2026, that afternoon showed up.

  • 80 to 100 mph wind gusts in the hardest hit corridors

  • Seven confirmed tornadoes across the region, including an EF-0 in Downers Grove with peak winds near 85 mph and a path over two miles long

  • Roughly 320,000 ComEd customers without power by Monday evening

  • About 170,000 still without power the following day, with nearly 30,000 of those in DuPage County alone

  • Hundreds of flight cancellations at O'Hare and Midway, plus a Cook County disaster proclamation


Power outages at that scale are, in large part, a tree story. Utility lines rarely fail on their own in a wind event. Trees and limbs bring them down.


DuPage County Took a Direct Hit


If you live in the western suburbs, you did not need a press release to know this. NWS survey crews confirmed a tornado in Glen Ellyn and significant straight line wind damage running southeast from Carol Stream through Wheaton, Downers Grove, Woodridge, Darien, Willowbrook, and Burr Ridge. A senior NWS meteorologist put it plainly in the Daily Herald: DuPage was hit hard, and by multiple rounds.


Drive through Wheaton or Glen Ellyn in the days after and the pattern was hard to miss. Not every tree came down. Not even most of them. But the ones that did came down hard, and they came down in a pattern that any experienced arborist would recognize immediately.


Straight Line Winds Do More Damage Than Tornadoes Here


Tornadoes get the headlines. Straight line winds do the work. In this event, the majority of damage across the metro area came from destructive straight line winds rather than tornadic circulation, which is typical for northern Illinois.


Why does that matter to you? Because a tornado is a narrow, unpredictable lottery. Straight line winds are broad, repeatable, and directional. They come from the same general quadrants year after year. Which means the exposure on your property is not random. It is a known variable, and known variables can be managed.


Why One Tree Fell and the One Next Door Did Not


This is the question we get asked at nearly every post storm consultation, usually while standing next to a splintered stump in Hinsdale or La Grange. Two similar trees, same species, same age, same block. One is fine. One is on the garage.


The answer is almost never luck. Here is what we actually look for.


Codominant Stems and Included Bark


Picture two people shaking hands versus two people pressing their palms flat against each other. One connection has interlocking structure. The other is just pressure. That is the difference between a strong branch union and a codominant union with included bark.


When a tree grows in the open, without forest competition pushing it upward, it tends to split into two or more competing leaders instead of maintaining one dominant trunk. Bark gets pinched between them rather than wood fusing together. Research summarized by Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories confirms what climbers see constantly: trees with codominant stems fail at higher rates than single stemmed trees, and these unions are very often the first thing to go in a wind event.


Suburban trees, growing in wide open front yards in Wilmette or Riverside with no neighbors to compete with, are practically designed to develop this defect.


Root Loss You Never Saw


Here is a hard truth about mature trees: the failure that dropped your oak may have been set in motion by a trench dug for an irrigation line in 2014.


Roots do not regenerate the way branches do. A driveway expansion, a new patio, a sewer repair, or a pool excavation can sever a meaningful percentage of a tree's structural root plate. The canopy looks fine for years. Then one saturated afternoon with 70 mph gusts, the tree simply tips over, root plate lifting, soil cracking in an arc on the leeward side.

Saturated Soil Plus Wind Equals Uprooting

Sometimes a tree carries a defect worth mitigating rather than removing, particularly a specimen tree that defines a property. Cabling and bracing, installed to ANSI A300 Part 3 standards, can reduce the likelihood of failure at a specific union.


Two honest caveats. Support systems require periodic inspection and eventual replacement, and they are not a substitute for sound judgment about whether a tree should stay. Anyone who installs a cable and walks away permanently has not done you a favor.

  2. Can you send a current certificate of insurance naming both general liability and workers' compensation? Ask for it to be sent directly from the insurer or agent, not as a photo of a paper in a glove box.

  3. Will the work be performed to ANSI A300 standards and ANSI Z133 safety requirements? If those numbers draw a blank stare, that is your answer.

  4. Do you use climbing spurs on trees you are pruning? Spurs are appropriate for removals. They are not appropriate for pruning a tree you intend to keep.

  5. Can you explain the objective of every cut you plan to make? "Cleaning it up" is not an objective. "Reducing end weight on the codominant stem over the driveway to lower leverage at a weak union" is.

Safety first, and we mean this literally. Assume every downed wire is energized. Stay away from any tree in contact with utility lines and call ComEd, not a tree service.
