ISA Certified Arborist & Tree Service in Naperville, IL

Naperville consistently ranks among the best places to live in America, and its urban forest is a major reason why. The city manages one of the most proactive forestry programs in Illinois — treating over 11,400 trees and planting 1,300 annually through its Department of Public Works. From the established canopy along Washington Street and the historic district to the mature subdivisions off Ogden Avenue and the newer developments south of 75th Street, Naperville's trees span every age and condition.

Prairie Tree Care provides ISA Certified Arborist services to Naperville homeowners, property managers, and developers, bringing credentialed expertise to a city that takes its trees seriously.

Tree Challenges in Naperville

Naperville's sheer size — over 140,000 residents across roughly 39 square miles — means tree conditions vary enormously. Older neighborhoods near downtown have mature oaks, elms, and maples that require structural management. Subdivisions from the 1970s-1990s are dealing with declining Bradford pears, chlorotic pin oaks, and the aftermath of EAB on untreated ash. Naperville's EAB treatment program saved over 85% of treated city ash trees, but many private property ash went untreated.

DuPage County's heavy clay soils create iron chlorosis problems across Naperville. The DuPage River and tributaries create flood-prone zones affecting root health. Active construction puts constant pressure on existing trees.

Naperville's Tree Ordinance

Naperville requires a tree removal permit for any tree 4 inches or greater in diameter on residential parcels larger than 1.5 acres. Parcels under 1.5 acres are exempt. All non-residential parcels require a permit regardless of size. Parkway trees are city property and may only be removed by Public Works.

We coordinate with Naperville's permit requirements and advise you on whether your project triggers the ordinance.

Tree Removal in Naperville

Naperville's size and variety means tree removal jobs range from straightforward dead ash takedowns in newer subdivisions to complex extractions of large oaks on established properties near downtown. For residential parcels over 1.5 acres, a tree removal permit is required for any tree 4 inches or greater in diameter. All commercial properties require permits regardless of lot size. Parkway trees are city property and can only be removed by Public Works. We assess every tree honestly — if treatment or structural support can extend its useful life, we'll tell you. When removal is the right call, we plan the job to protect your surrounding landscape, coordinate permits where required, and advise on diverse replacement species.

Tree Pruning in Naperville

Naperville's urban forest spans every age — from the heritage oaks near downtown Washington Street to 15-year-old builder-grade trees in newer developments that are already showing structural problems. Each needs a different pruning approach. Mature trees get structural risk reduction: deadwood removal, end-weight reduction on overextended limbs, and management of codominant stems with included bark. Young trees get formative pruning that establishes good branch architecture early, preventing the problems that lead to expensive interventions or premature removal later. We follow ANSI A300 standards and schedule oak pruning outside the April-July oak wilt risk window.

Frequently Asked Questions — Naperville

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my property in Naperville?

It depends on your lot size. If your residential parcel is over 1.5 acres, a permit is required for any tree 4 inches or greater in diameter. Parcels under 1.5 acres are exempt. All commercial properties require permits regardless of size. Parkway trees are city property and can only be removed by Public Works. We advise on whether your project requires a permit and handle the coordination.

Naperville treated its parkway ash trees for EAB. Should I treat the ash on my private property?

If your ash is in good health with less than 30% canopy dieback, trunk injection treatment is usually worth it at $8-$15 per diameter inch every two years. Naperville's city program proved that treatment works — over 85% of treated ash showed minor or no EAB damage. But if your ash is already showing significant decline, the money is better spent on removal and replacement with a diverse species mix.

What's causing the yellow leaves on my oak tree in Naperville?

Almost certainly iron chlorosis from DuPage County's alkaline clay soils. Pin oaks are the most common victims. Treatment options include trunk injection for immediate results and long-term soil amendment using air spade. We also advise on whether transitioning to an alkaline-tolerant oak species makes more sense long-term.
