ISA Certified Arborist in Brookfield, IL
Brookfield is a village that understands the value of its trees. The village maintains an active forestry program with a 5-6 year block pruning cycle, inspecting and pruning approximately 1,300 parkway trees annually through its Public Works Department. A 50/50 cost-share planting program helps residents add new parkway trees. And of course, Brookfield is home to Brookfield Zoo Chicago — 216 acres of managed landscape featuring species like white oak (Illinois' state tree), American sycamore, and persimmon that echo the native oak-savanna ecosystem that once covered this region.
Prairie Tree Care provides ISA Certified Arborist services to Brookfield homeowners, bringing credentialed expertise to a community that invests in its urban canopy.
Tree Challenges in Brookfield
Brookfield's residential neighborhoods feature a mix of tree ages — from pre-war specimens in the older blocks near the zoo and downtown to mid-century plantings throughout the village's post-war subdivisions. Many of these trees are entering the stage where age-related structural issues, accumulated storm damage, and species-specific decline become management concerns. Norway maples and silver maples planted in the 1950s-1970s are developing the brittleness and cavity problems common to these species at maturity.
The village sits on heavy Cook County clay soils with poor drainage, creating iron chlorosis in pin oaks and root health issues in flood-prone areas. Salt Creek runs through neighboring communities and influences groundwater levels on Brookfield's south side. Winter salt damage from major roads — Ogden Avenue, 31st Street, and Prairie Avenue — stresses trees on adjacent properties.
The loss of ash trees to emerald ash borer removed significant canopy, and while the village's 50/50 planting program is helping replace parkway losses, many private property ash went untreated and need removal or replacement.
Brookfield's parkway regulations are strict — only trees planted by the village are permitted on parkways, and no parkway work can be done without a permit from the Director of Public Works. All construction projects require a landscape plan reviewed by the Forestry Department.

Frequently Asked Questions — Brookfield
Can I trim or remove a parkway tree in Brookfield?
No — you cannot do anything to a parkway tree without a permit from the Director of Public Works. The village manages all parkway trees, including a 5-6 year block pruning cycle that trims approximately 1,300 trees annually. Only trees planted by the village are permitted in the parkway. If you have a concern about a parkway tree (dead branches, disease, leaning), contact Public Works and they'll assess it. Prairie Tree Care handles the private property trees on your lot where you have full control over care decisions.
The village trims parkway trees on a 5-6 year cycle. Is that enough for my private trees too?
A 5-6 year cycle is reasonable for established trees in good condition, but your private property trees may need more frequent attention depending on species, age, and proximity to structures. Young trees benefit from structural pruning every 1-2 years during establishment. Trees near your house, garage, or driveway should be inspected more frequently for deadwood and structural defects. We develop a custom pruning schedule based on your specific trees rather than applying a one-size-fits-all cycle.
Our silver maple is getting big and dropping large branches. Should we remove it?
Not necessarily. Silver maples are fast-growing and develop weak branch attachments, which is why they drop limbs. But a well-managed silver maple can remain serviceable for years with proper pruning — reducing end-weight on long laterals, removing codominant stems with included bark, and cleaning out deadwood. A TRAQ assessment gives you a clear picture of the tree's structural condition and whether targeted pruning or removal is the better investment. If removal does make sense, we'll recommend a structurally superior replacement species.
We want to participate in the village's 50/50 tree planting program but also want to plant on our private property. What species should we consider?
For Brookfield's clay soils: bur oak and swamp white oak for long-lived canopy, hackberry and Kentucky coffeetree for tough adaptable shade, and tulip tree or American linden for faster initial growth. Avoid pin oak (chlorosis in our alkaline soils), Bradford pear (structural failure and now illegal to sell in several states), and green ash (EAB). If you're planting near the street, choose species with salt tolerance — honeylocust (thornless cultivars), hackberry, and Kentucky coffeetree handle road salt well. We assess your specific site before recommending.
